Dulce de Leche is the Argentine sweet delicacy par excellence. Since 2003 it is part of the country´s "Culinary and Gastronomic Cultural Heritage". Although its origin is disputed by several countries, like Brazil and Uruguay, the legend tells that it was invented by accident in Argentina on the evening of October, 1829. That day, two political leaders, Juan Manuel de Rosas and his opponent Juan Lavalle, were going to meet to sign a treaty of peace at the former´s hacienda. The story goes that while the servant was cooking the “lechada” - a preparation made of hot milk and sugar, which was Rosas favorite´s to have with his “mate” (the traditional South American beverage) - General Juan Lavalle arrived, and since he was so tired he decided to take a nap while awaiting Rosas arrival. When the servant discovered his master´s opponent fast asleep on Rosas´s cot, she called the guards to throw him out, leaving the lechada cooking on the fire. Thankfully Rosas arrived at that exact time to prevent the guards from awakening Lavalle. When the servant returned to the stove, she found that the lechada had turned into a thick brownish paste. With some fear, she confessed Rosas what had occurred. But instead of getting angry, he tried the paste and found it so delicious that he invited his opponent to enjoy it with him while signing the peace agreement. “World Dulce de Leche Day” is now celebrated each October 11 to commemorate the eventful afternoon when this inimitable caramel-like sauce was invented by mistake.
